Chetonai Bangladesh

Preserving Heritage, Inspiring Generations

About us

Chetonai Bangladesh is a non-profit organization founded in 2016 with a heartfelt mission — to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich culture, history, and traditions of Bangladesh within the British Bangladeshi community. Established under the passionate leadership of Meera Barua, Chetonai Bangladesh has become a vibrant platform where culture, identity, and history come alive for the next generation.
Living away from the land of our ancestors, it is easy for traditions to fade and connections to weaken. Chetonai Bangladesh was created to bridge this gap — to make sure that young British Bangladeshis grow up with a strong sense of who they are, where they come from, and the incredible heritage they inherit.
Since its founding, Chetonai Bangladesh has worked tirelessly across local communities in the UK, offering programs that bring the spirit of Bangladesh to life for children and families. Through cultural arts, educational initiatives, and historical storytelling, the organization empowers young people with pride, knowledge, and a strong cultural identity that connects them both to Bangladesh and to the wider British society.

Our Work with the Community

At Chetonai Bangladesh, we believe that culture is not something to be locked away in history books — it must be lived, shared, and celebrated.
Our programs are designed to be interactive, joyful, and deeply educational.
Children and young people participate in:

  •  Singing Workshops: Learning traditional Bangladeshi songs that echo the hopes and dreams of generations.
  • Cultural Dance Classes: Moving to the rhythms that have been part of Bangladeshi celebrations and ceremonies for centuries.
  • Art and Painting Sessions: Expressing cultural stories, landscapes, and history through visual arts.
  • Storytelling and History Lessons: Hearing the powerful tales of Bangladesh’s past, from the Language Movement of 1952 to the Liberation War of 1971.

Through these programs, we connect children with the everyday experiences of life in Bangladesh — from the vibrant village festivals to the important historical struggles for identity and freedom.
One of our proudest missions is to teach children about the bravery of those who fought for the right to speak Bangla during the 1952 Language Movement. We share the inspiring story of how young students and activists, standing against oppression, sacrificed their lives so future generations could speak their mother tongue freely. This moment, known as Ekushey February, holds a special place in the heart of every Bangladeshi, and it continues to inspire the work we do today.
We also ensure that every young person learns about the Liberation War of 1971, when brave freedom fighters faced overwhelming odds to win Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan. By understanding these struggles, children not only appreciate their heritage — they also learn the universal values of courage, resilience, and sacrifice.
